These responsible practices help us minimize our impact on the ocean’s ecosystem. Fish caught using low-impact gear are superior in every way to the way the vast majority of the world's fish are captured. Almost all the fish found in grocery stores and other online seafood providers are caught by giant boats called factory trawlers. These boats catch tens of thousands of pounds of fish at a time. The result? Your fish gets crushed, bruised, and suffocated. This is one of the reasons that your fish tastes “fishy.” These trawlers also catch thousands of pounds of fish they don't mean to catch. These fish are thrown back over the side of the boat — dead. For our small-boat fishermen, if the fish caught is not the species the fisherman is after, a simple flip of the hook allows the fish to be released to live out the rest of its life.

Our fishermen take shorter fishing trips than the average fishing vessel — never longer than three days compared to the industry standard of five — which means they return with a fresher catch. Our fishermen deeply respect the fish they harvest and handle each one individually. As soon as a fish comes out of the water, the race against the clock to preserve quality begins. The fish is bled on the boat and immediately immersed in slush ice, rapidly cooling and preserving its delicate meat. This preserves the fresh-from-the-ocean flavor and assures that your fish arrives at your doorstep at the peak of freshness.
